As time passed further, men became civilised and cultured. They shunned nomadic lives and shifted to a settled lifestyle. They formed inter-independent societies. The approach to life became more nuanced. But the men’s urge to control women remained undiminished. Powerful men fought battles to get their desired women, putting at risk thousands of lives in the process. Some of such accounts were immortalised in the form of great stories. Be it great epics such as Ramayana or Mahabharata of the East, or the Iliad of Homer from the West, the woman was the trigger for the greatest of the battles.
Despite the lessons that history taught, the mighty men continued to go weak at their knees. Women continued to influence the fortunes of the kings and princes. They made them happy, gloomy, angry and mad. Many books were written to document the trials and tribulations of the men-in-love. Many of such stories have become popular through folklore or cinema. Yet, there are many more real stories that have remained hidden in history books. Each story tells us how a royal scion wagered everything that he possessed to win over his woman — some succeeded, while some did not.
This book is a compilation of 12 stories of women who influenced the fortunes of their suitors. The stories narrate how women weathered the storm skilfully to get back to their partners or remained mute spectators of bloodshed. Each of these stories, picked over a timeline of more than 2,000 years from various regions of India, reminds us that men have changed little. The saga of a man and a woman remains the same as it was over 2,000 years ago.”
