In an almost magical style of writing, this book describes a life as emperor, and meanwhile refers to the writing style of legendary novels and the creation of classical artistic conception. It tells of the bumpy life of prince Duan Bai who is reduced from a fatuous emperor living a complicated court life into a folk juggler in the street, and eventually becomes a monk living in seclusion in the mountains. Through the life trajectory of Duan Bai, the novel pushes the relationship between individuals and history to a new height. Individuals are no longer trusted slaves and maid-servants to history, but break out of historical norms, showing mankind's resistance to and escape from their established life trajectory.”
