In their anthology Tales of Terror from Blackwood's Magazine, Robert Morrison and Chris Baldick identify the author as John Wilson (1785-1854), a Scot who had careers in literature and law as well as being Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University from 1820 to 1851.
