When her sister passes away in a tragic drunk driving accident, eighteen-year-old Summer Mason is sent to spend her summer with her busybody grandparents in Maui. In order to escape her trauma, Summer throws herself into the island making new friends, working a part-time job, and going for early morning jogs on the peaceful beaches.
But just when life starts to feel ok again, her grandparents take in a father and son who have fallen on hard times, moving Summer out to the guest house. Though initially relieved to have more space to herself, she ends up feeling more alone than ever. After reluctantly befriending her new housemates, she soon finds herself opening up and even falling in love.
As Summer deals with the waves of grief, she is confronted by two different lives and realizes she needs to choose her own path.
